How do I identify a 4-speed Ford toploader? ›

The Toploader 4-speed transmission is identified by a small metal tag riveted to the right side of the case. The first line is the transmission's ID number. The second line is the serial number. The codes listed here are for Ford vehicles.

A = 1940s, B = 1950s, C = 1960s, D = 1970s, E = 1980s, F = 1990s. The second digit will be a numeral, and will represent the year within that decade (i.e. C2 = 1962; E7 = 1987).
