Shazam: Fury of the Gods' Grace Caroline Currey Reveals Why She Plays Both Young and Adult Mary Marvel (5)

While Mary Marvel makes a brief appearance at the end of the first movie, the character truly gets to shine in the sequel Shazam: Fury of the Gods, with viewers getting to experience the full breadth of the character as both Mary Marvel and Mary Bromfield. In Shazam: Fury of the Gods, actress Grace Caroline Currey plays Mary in both her child and superhero form, making her the only member of the cast to do so.

While Currey originally only played the young version of Mary, the responsible “den-mother” and eldest sibling of the foster kids in the first movie, Currey was cast to play Mary in her hero form as well for the movie’s sequel. Currey spoke to Game Rant about her experience stepping into the role of Mary Marvel, and why she was the only member of the cast who was able to take on the task of playing both versions of her character.

Currey explained that her being able to play both Mary Bromfield and Mary Marvel was a situation unique to her. “It works for Mary because she’s the oldest of the foster kids, and I was already an adult when we shot the first one as well,” she explained.

“They were trying to decide if they wanted to have one actor play both the human form and superhero form for the first one as well because she’s older, and a lot of the time in the comics, Mary visually didn’t change that much.”

Ultimately, the decision was made for the sequel to allow Currey to step into both roles. To visually distinguish between the two versions of Mary, Currey is equipped with Mary’s signature superhero suit, as well as given additional hair.

In fact, Currey cites being able to wear the suit as one of her most anticipated parts about returning to the franchise.

“Being in the suit was my biggest excitement and focus, because I was getting to play a brand-new character to a degree. Even though I was returning as Mary in her human form, the superhero form was so new for me, so it was really exciting to get to explore that side of her.”

Beyond merely visual differences, Currey wanted to make sure there were differences in her physicality when playing each version of Mary to help differentiate the two. “I come from a ballet background, so I can be a little light and delicate in my physicality. I wanted to have more strength and sturdiness being Mary, so I did taekwondo beforehand, as well as kickboxing to just feel more grounded and rooted in strength.”

Currey worked to combine the elegance and grace of her ballet background with the strength of her new training to portray both versions of Mary in a way that was both connected, but distinct, allowing her to uniquely portray Mary Marvel.
